Hardwood floors can be solid wood - one piece milled from lumber - or engineered wood. Engineered wood is "real" wood, but consists of three to ten thin layers of wood, assembled and glued in a cross-ply construction. Because of the structure, engineered wood can be more stable than solid wood, however solid wood can be more easily sanded and refinished (required every 15 - 20 years).
