Travertine or Porcelain?

Many of our customers ask about the differences in tile products. We're here to take the Mystery out of the Mosaics!

The timeless beauty and elegance of natural stone tiles is what continues to make them a popular choice. Natural Stone tiles include granite, travertine, slate and marble. Of this group, slate and granite are the most dense and highly resistant to stains, making them excellent choices for kitchen and bath applications. Marble is a softer, more porous stone, that is better suited to bath applications. There are many colors and styles from which to choose.

Travertine tiles are natural limestone. Colors vary from pale to dark cream with attractive surface variations. Travertine is very durable and is used to give an elegant, luxurious feel to any room. Because travertine is a softer natural stone, it needs to be sealed, and is not suited to high traffic areas.

Porcelain Tile is a material made primarily from finely ground sand. The process to make porcelain involves high pressure and extremely high temperatures, which results in a very dense, glass-like material with a water absorption rate of less than 0.5%, making it an exceptional choice for kitchen and bath applications. Recent surges in popularity have resulted in many new porcelain tile designs in all shapes, sizes and colors. A budget-saving idea is to use porcelain for your floor and a natural tile for your backsplash.
